Capturing your target customers’ attention isn’t enough – you also need to hold that attention

Life, as we all know too well, can be erratic and unpredictable, even on a day-by-day, hour-by-hour, and minute-by-minute basis.

It will certainly be the case for your ecommerce store’s target customers, who might find themselves hovering over the “buy now” button for a product in your shop, only to suddenly be distracted by a need to answer the door or attend to their children.

For an online business owner, the problem with their customers getting distracted is that the customer in question might be taken away from the store forever, with a potential sale being lost.

If you fear this is a possible problem for your own online store, you obviously can’t deal with all your target shoppers’ distractions for them. Instead, you are dependent on your brand being memorable enough that those customers remember to come back to your store once the distraction has passed.

So, here are a few potential ways to ensure exactly that.

Give your company and/or product a memorable name

Some brands have such a generic name, that the company won’t necessarily even be the first thing that comes up in a Google search if the customer searches for it later. So, even if your target customer does remember to seek out your store again, a less-than-distinctive name might present barriers to them getting back to that all-important checkout stage.

Of course, you might not necessarily wish to use a “quirky” or “offbeat” name for your business or product, if this doesn’t align with the image you wish to cultivate. However, memorability can certainly be a powerful factor in nudging a brand ahead of competitors.

If you favour not changing what might be a well-established name for your company, consider how you could be memorable and entertaining in other ways – for example, through your video marketing, social media campaigns, and/or blog posts.

Create ways to keep in regular contact with your site visitors

If your brand’s image – and its store’s offerings – resonate with your target customers, this will help to ensure they at least occasionally come back, even amid everyday distractions.

However, you can go further than this to “capture” a customer for the longer term. If you get your site visitors to share their contact details with you, or to follow your brand’s social media profiles, this will take a lot of pressure off you. It will enable you to build a longer-term relationship and effectively persuade such customers to buy from you over days, weeks, months, and even years, instead of in just one session.

One way of capturing a customer’s details could be to offer them an obviously valuable deal – such as a product discount, guide, or ebook – that only requires a tiny commitment from them.
